Europe needs to get real on defence; Britain needs to get real on Europe

‘Blind Ali’ – it sounds like me on my driving test after completing my course of lessons with the Barnard Castle School of Driving. In fact it is the twitter handle of someone called Ali Samson who this morning said this:
‘We live in a time when Cummings’ elitism enraging voters is more damaging to the government than tens of thousands of avoidable deaths. That’s how far down the rabbit hole we are.’
Certainly, we should not, amid the current Johnson/Cummings scandal, be losing sight of the fact that only Trump’s America, Putin’s Russia and Bolsonaro’s Brazil – can’t think what they have in common with Johnson’s Britain! – are doing as badly as the UK when it comes to death rates.
But the two things, Blind Ali, are actually linked, and sometimes it takes a particular story about a particular person to illustrate bigger political truths that have been clear to some, but vague to others, for some time.
The truths in questions are these.
All of the above and more, Blind Ali, are what Cummings, this so-called maverick genius strategist, has made crystal clear to anyone who has eyes in their head, sufficient to drive to Barnard Castle or not. The tragedy is that on their journey, he and his so-called boss are smashing the country into brick wall at high speed.

Over dependence on one unelected person. For all the reasons articulated in this blog. Clearly Johnson needs Cummings for his project. It is my sincere wish that Cummings resigns or is fired. I want Johnson to not cope. I want him and his project to crash and burn. It is the surest route out of the mess we are in.
“They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words.” – Jean-Paul Sartre
Unfortunately Alistair your primary weapon will not find purchase against this enemy.
What is happening behind the scenes while they put up this smokescreen of absurdity. What news is being buried? How badly is the civil service being dismantled as we speak? Can our institutions survive? The attorney general is bought and paid for, could the separation of powers be eroded completely? I fear we’re wading into very dangerous territory.
Superb – nailed it
(except typo in point 7 – grouns instead of grounds…)
See my earlier, past two days, tweets regarding Johnson and Cummings. In any other Country and Administration, it would be ringing National Security alarms all over the place, when the PM openly reveals his total dependency on his one advisor and that he is prepared to adjust interpretation of Law to protect him and sacrifice the respect and integrity of his entire cabinet in a desperate attempt to cling on to this miscreant Cummings. If Johnson is so much “in the grasp” of Cummings National Security is at risk. The fact that Cummings is an Anti Establishment Lenonist, accountable to no one and under no control, open to being influenced or blackmailed/bribed by foreign enemy Govern ends, means that the Prime Minister can be Influenced and Controlled to the detriment of the National Security et al of the UK. Johnson and Cummings must be exposed and removed.
These are very, very dark times for this country, but there’s a new spirit in the air. The cult of Boris, for that’s what it is, will eventually fall into the abysmal chaos of it’s own ineptitude and gross misuse of trust. To hasten this demise, to lessen the damage and the lives lost, I think it is time to stop being shocked, and also time to stop being manipulated. Watch for the sleight of hand. Watch what is not said, how the chosen truths change, watch out for heroic symbolism that is intended to render the rest of us weak and passive. We are all heroes one way or another, from the delivery driver, shopkeeper staying open, elite engineer, doctor or scientist, the tired nurse, the person enduring loneliness and the many afraid of never finding good employment. We must question every request and action that preys on our decentness, good nature and caring. We must stop co-operating, stop colluding in our indignation, stop allowing our work to be appropriated for jaded political means. We must turn our backs on these people, bog them down, demonstrate active and collective self-control that shows consciousness – and that we will resist. Don’t let them get in our taxis, nor buy a coffee from us, nor fix their gutters, or whatever else they take for granted in a civilised society. They need to know the day of reckoning will come. We will work together. We will not be divided, data-mined and subject to paranoiac control. We are a country of decent, ingenious and free-willed people and we have many challenges ahead. We will support and help each other, despite these venal, self-absorbed, mediocre, sycophantic, misfits. Thank you Dominic Cummings for this gift of awakening.
