I remember your description of TB’s illness during the Gulf trip in the Diaries. I was feeling very sorry for the man not being able to extricate himself from his duty for one darn day… but then the world’s pressing matters do not care about these personal inconveniences.
I do think, however, that public appearances where a leader (especially one of Obama’s stature) shows signs of illness are somewhat endearing. Obama got a cold on the campaign trail, and sneezed numerous times while delivering a speech in the rain on some godforsaken field in Nowheresville USA, and the media and his supporters responded positively, appreciating his decision to come and speak despite his health. And while most of us choose to call in sick when we feel mild signs of a cold, it does say something that others (i.e. our leaders) not only go to work, but also have a financial crisis and a nuclear showdown to deal with. Two thumbs up for them!!
P.S. I missed the Fox News coverage of Obama’s cold… I wonder if their Breaking News bar said something to the effect of “President Obama spreads deadly terrorist cold virus…” I wouldn’t be surprised if their pathetic little brains churned out something like this.
whilst Mr Obama may still get some sympathy in a honymoon period which seems to get shorter with every passing day,and every new president/PM.
The so called top jobs seems to be a world I would fear sleep, when they all seem to leap from one crisis to another with many more of a PR fo par to be wakened by the next revelation of who’s shagging whom, or who’s fiddling what expence claim these so called cleaver people don,t seem to have an ounce of common.
With all the scrutany MPs are under and yes I know they may not have broken any rules, but wouldnt you just put your house in order?
In the current climate I don,t think it wise any MPs or bankers for that matter to whing about there lot do you.
For most people, meeting the Queen on its own would be enough to keep the mind occupied for a week. I think we sometimes underestimate (and take for granted) the workload of the people at the top of the political tree. Obama is certainly using his honeymoon period well though, and his wife has been terrific too. I loved her message the the kids in the London school she visited
Yes, and it “THE COLD” was cured the instant he kissed Abdallah’s ring!
Well, at least he didn’t have to meet Britain’s Dr Goebbels and listen to this crassly “sympathetic” and self aggrandising analysis of his tour.
Let’s think about all those thousands of maimed Iraqi men, women and children who will be suffering for decades from the needless bombing they received after your disingenuous rhetoric about WMDs.
How do you sleep at night knowing that you encouraged war mindlessly? Your post rationalisations are meaningless. Let’s see you visit the victims of your deadly hubris and devote the rest of your life and income to their wellbeing.
Hush-hush this morning, because, even as we speak, the ladies of National Mind HQ, the leading mental health charity, are mulling over whether Mr Alastair Campbell deserves to be short-listed to win their title, Mind Champion of the Year 2009
The winner will collect the award in London on Thursday 14 May, wait, that’s a mere 11 days before you celebrate your birthday, I reckon
My only concerns would be that Mind’s expectations of you as their possible Champion of the Year would remain reasonable and modest. For fear they might interfere with the main charitable commitment always closest to your heart, sir. Raising much-needed funds for Leukaemia Research, that is
Who knows what collecting the new 2009 Mind Champion of the Year award might entail? Posing for publicity shots? Maybe alongside CommCare cases who escaped the NHS psychiatric system
Guess these would include past Mind Champion award winners like Stephen Fry and Dr Liz Miller. Plus Mind President, Lord Melvyn Bragg. Even bubbly Ruby Wax, perhaps
Most of whom you must’ve shaken hands with before, I bet. Thus proving, whatever the madness is, it can’t be that contagious, can it?
Besides, gifting each celebrity a signed, promotional copy of “Tout est dans la Tete” on camera, should ensure your novel reaches the attentions of the wider audience I feel it deserves
These booksales-booster musings, respectfully submitted by Trevor Malcolm, Portsmouth Hampshire, with my compliments
